It's simply a premade solution that you can install without having to know the technical details. You're not paying for some revolutionary new technology. But installing custom firmware and setting this up yourself on the router side is going to take a fair bit of time and knowledge. Nobody is claiming that you couldn't do something similar with your home system, and you're free to do so.
